If you’ve looked at kitchen remodeling magazines in oh, say, the last ten years, you probably have noticed that stainless steel appliances have dominated the scene for several years now. But what if you’re just not that into stainless and are planning a kitchen remodel – will choosing traditional white or black appliances discourage potential buyers if you decide to sell your home? Or is it really a matter of personal preference? According to some designers, stainless steel is in its twilight years. So what is the hot trend? And do black and white appliances pass the trend test?

The truth is, you should not worry about trends and design your kitchen for your own personal tastes. When a kitchen has been beautifully designed, the appliance color should be chosen as a complement, not just because “everybody’s doing it.” For instance, for an art-deco look, you can choose black appliances, dark countertops and flooring, chrome accessories, and an off-white cabinet finish. Black appliances also look great with dark wood cabinetry and heavy furniture. Prefer an artistic, industrial look? Black works better than stainless steel in that application because it helps balance the look, where stainless appliances would compete.

How about white? Well, believe it or not, it’s projected that white appliances will soon overtake stainless steel as the new color trend. In fact, Whirlpool’s White Ice appliance line is currently gaining in popularity. While not a new look, the updated version features a glossy, glass-like sheen. This look is highly popular in Europe currently, so it’s no surprise the trend has made its way stateside. And if you still long for the above-mentioned black, you’re in luck – the Whirlpool Ice Collection will also feature Black Ice, which will have the same sleekness and high shine as the White Ice. The Ice Collection will be available in dishwashers, refrigerators, microwave ovens and ranges.
