First of all – consider yourself fortunate to have a bathroom off of your master bedroom! Yep, that’s an ensuite, and if you’re planning a bedroom remodeling project, you should consider grouping your ensuite into the equation. Why? There are a couple of considerations.
Aesthetically speaking, you may want your bedroom and ensuite to flow together. If you update your bedroom but leave your master bath lingering in a different era, you may quickly become disappointed with the look and decide on a bath remodel. And that could cause some issues with the space you’ve just remodeled – and that spells disaster.
What you’ll want to do is assess the condition of your ensuite. Is the plumbing in good shape? The fixtures? The tub, toilet and shower? Sometimes you won’t need to invest in all new fixtures, just in some new flooring and paint for the walls. But if there are any leaks, cracks or mold and mildew, you’ll want to get those things remedied right away, as they can make your newly remodeled bedroom suddenly uninhabitable. (Think a burst pipe, rotting floorboards or a black mold problem.) When you think of your ensuite as an extension of your bedroom, then it becomes easier to accept the cost factor of a remodeling project that includes it.
Another thing you might want to consider when remodeling your bedroom and ensuite is incorporating some built-in storage, like a linen closet or some custom cabinetry. If you need more room, but don’t think you can make the space in your bathroom, assess how often you actually take a bath, and how often you use the shower. Especially if you have another bathroom in your home, you might want to consider opening up the room by installing a shower, and then using the room you gain from removing the bathtub to build in some closet space.
Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your ensuite is properly vented. If your bedroom seems humid a lot, and sometimes seems to have that damp, musty smell, it might be from excess moist air coming from the ensuite. If you experience a lot of dampness in and around your ensuite, you will definitely want to check out your plumbing to make sure you’re dealing with any water leakage issues you may be having. It may be added expense, but it will save you a lot of money, time and aggravation in the long run.
