When you’re in the process of renovating your kitchen, there’s a lot to think about, from the type of flooring, to the cabinetry, to the materials you choose for your countertops, to the types of appliances that will best meet the needs of your lifestyle. The one element that brings it all together is the color scheme. And, if you Google this on the internet, you’ll find that there are many schools of thought out there as to what color scheme is best. Some designers will tell you that a clean, white look is timeless, while others are saying that dark, contemporary-looking color schemes are the best. So how can you decide?
The best piece of advice we can give you is that the color scheme you choose should be a reflection of you and your living space. It’s not going to make sense to have a bold contemporary kitchen in your airy little country cottage home, for instance. What’s your style? What colors make you and your family feel most at home? If your kitchen’s color scheme feels out of place, no matter how beautiful and new your countertops, cabinetry and appliances are, you may not truly feel at home and comfortable in your new kitchen.
Aside from your own personal preferences, there are a few other things you’ll want to keep in mind as you select your kitchen’s color scheme, which we’ve outlined for you here:
Cabinetry: Choose your cabinetry first, as it takes up a good deal of the visual space in your kitchen. The cabinetry should reflect your personal taste and style, and should be the starting point for your color scheme.
Countertops: Countertops are the most eye-level of your kitchen elements and take up a great deal of visual space. Choose a countertop color that coordinates well with your cabinetry color.
Appliances: Your sink and appliances are focal points in your kitchen, and it will be essential that they complement your cabinetry to maintain the visual flow.
Flooring: You’ll want to consider the type of flooring, as well as colors and patterns. You’ll want it to complement not only all the other elements in your kitchen, but work well with the flooring throughout your home as well.
Backsplash: Today there are many unique backsplash options, with many materials, colors and patterns available. The right backsplash can be a showpiece in your kitchen, but the wrong backsplash can totally clash with your look and make your kitchen appear disjointed.
Wall color: Once you’ve brought all the other elements together, you’ll want to choose a wall color that acts as a backdrop and coordinates.
Accessories: Just like the perfect jewelry enhances a clothing ensemble, the perfect accessories like door handles, knobs, and faucets can be the finishing touch on your new kitchen.
