Often, we think of our bathroom as a kind of personal utility room – the place where you go to “do your business” and keep clean. But with a little inspired thinking, you can turn your bathroom space from a boring, basic spot to a rustic room with lots of visual interest and charm.

  • Use an old wood door as the bathroom door. Weathered, aged wood looks great when you’re going for a rustic look. Leave as-is, apply a complementary stain, or try a distressed-look painting technique for added visual interest.
  • Add a rustic ladder to the bathroom area. On the highest rung, you can hang decorating elements like metal stars, old watering cans, etc. Put the lower rungs to practical use – use them for your towel rack!
  • Choose a wrought-iron shower curtain rod. Or just paint your existing one black for a similar effect. A plain, muslin shower curtain looks amazing coupled with a black shower rod!
  • Visit an antique show and grab some great old stuff! Accessories like vintage bathroom scales, old soap boxes and bottles, worn braided rugs – these all look great in a rustic bathroom.
  • Stack some old wooden crates for added storage. Find crates of various sizes and stack them. This will add valuable shelf and storage space to your bathroom while enhancing the rustic charm. Great for your towels and toiletries!
  • Get rid of unattractive packaging. Create storage solutions using a little bit of creativity. Wicker baskets for towels, Mason jars for Q-tips and cotton balls, and antique bowls and bottles for potpourri and scented oils are a great way to remove the “modern” and add a whimsical, rustic charm to your bathroom.
